I went out to Shoals again, but just for the day this time. It was the annual trip of Project S.M.A.R.T. to Appledore Island and the Shoals Marine Lab. The Environmental and Marine Sciences folks had a great time. I won't talk about the Bio-Tech kids. However, there was one defector!
We saw the protected intertidal sections and the exposed sides. We followed Tye and Kyle to their pools of burping algae. We also helped ourselves to water samples. I saw some preliminary results of the investigation and there were toxic cyanobacteria in the pools. GREAT!
We also saw lots and lots of gulls. Of course, there are less this year than in years past since some unknown person let raccoons loose on the island a few years back. I have been told that all of the raccoons have been caught and returned to the mainland. We can hope!
This was my second trip to Shoals this summer. I don't know if it will be my last. Maybe I will take the tour of Celia Thaxter's garden. Or maybe I won't! Anyway, with an undergrad out on the island doing a research project, people from the Haney lab have been making many trips out there. I am guessing there will be at least one more trip out there.
