This cactus bloomed twice last fall. Once it was white and the second time, seen here, it was this pretty yellow. I couldn't believe how big the flower was compared to the plant. HUGE! Now I am reading that most cacti are not self pollinators. I wonder if this one needed a bat? Either way, the flower was not pollinated and we didn't get any cactus seeds. BUMMER!
This particular cactus has now dried up from the inside out. I was thinking perhaps that this species can only flower once, but that isn't the cactus way. We just did something wrong in cactus care. I can't believe it. I mean, who can kill a cactus? Me, I guess. We gave it sun. We gave it water every so often. Now I guess we need to repot the remaining two so they have enough nutrients. As a plant biology undergrad, you would think I would know about these things. However, I wasn't in "Horticulture". That would have given me practical gardening skills. I guess I can always go back for another bachelor's degree, right?
