I wish I had some pictures to illustrate today's ramble, but alas, I was too hyped up and focused on keeping score in today's softball game to get my camera out of the bag. At least I had it with me! Maybe I will remember it next time.
Today was a 6 o'clock game. I got there early, but I didn't have much hope of having a full team. Only 4 people had emailed me back telling me they could make it. By five of six, we only had 6 players. We have to have 8 to have a game. No one wanted to forfeit.
I knew a guy on one of the teams that just finishing up, so I asked him if he would stay and play for us. Okay, not totally within the rules, but no one was going to say anything. The team we were going to play was also using a player from the earlier game. While I was trying to put a roster together with 7 people, Jason Goldstein went over to the tennis courts. Five minutes later he returned with two guys--one named John and the other named Artie. These were two complete strangers who had nothing better to do. And they were really good players! Jason also got one of the players from the winning team of the earlier game to play, Ryan. So, with a team of 6 regulars and 4 subs, we had a really hillarious game!
I didn't get walked today at all! I actually tried hitting, which just isn't a good plan. The other team was really nice during my first at bat though since they were winning at the time. I took a partial swing at a pitch and our umpire said I had gone around. The guys in the field said, "No, give her another chance!" It didn't help though, I still struck out! Molly got a walk and on base at least one other time. Chris Manning almost hit for the cycle--he got at least a triple, double, and single. We did a pretty good job in the field for not having a lot of our regulars who had worked together before. I know someone got a homerun, but I have no idea who it was. I am not Brady when it comes to remembering baseball statistics.
After the dust cleared, we had actually scored 10--count 'em folks--10 runs! Of course, so did the other team, but hey, who's counting? Of course, it was a good thing I was attempting to keep score, the other team wanted to only count 3 of our 5 runs one inning, but being the great third string coach that I am, I checked with the Rec Dept. guy and he said we had scored 5. Really, can you ever beat fun at the old ball park?
So, thanks to our regular players: ME, Scott Walker, Jay Beaudet, Jason Goldstein, Molly Waters, Chris Manning. Thanks to the "new" players:
Hopefully we will have our regular first baseman back next week, Brady. The guy who played first today is on another team and not eligible to play for us. I bet Brady could give Derek Lee a run for his money (Hey, you can still vote for D-Lee for the All-Star game if you haven't given your 25 votes yet! I had to get it in here somehow.) So come see a game, make some comments, drop me an email, or go find a new friend on the tennis courts!
